May is Fair Trade Month!

"Before you've finished your breakfast this morning, you'll have relied on half the world" - Martin Luther King

You have heard of Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, and tea, but what about a FairPhone or Fair Trade jewellery? Have you resisted choosing Fair Trade products because they are more expensive? Why is that anyways?

During the month of May, SCIC will take you on a journey to answer these questions, and help you think critically about the social, ecological, and economic impacts of things we consume in our everyday lives.  Begin the journey by watching this short video.

Did you know that 70% of the world is fed by small-scale farmers, many of whom are women? Fairtrade not only ensures a fair price but also establishes long-term trading relationships, enabling families and communities to plan for the future. Additionally, a feature of fairtrade production is that it is democratically-run, giving women a voice for their future.

But why choose fair trade chocolate? So that you can help put an end to child labor, and ensure producers have sufficient income to send their children to school. Check out this infographic that simply goes over the WHY behind choosing fair trade!

To cap off Fair Trade month, SCIC invites you to take part in a (virtual) conversation about how we can consume more ethically -  – to ensure workers’ human rights are being met, and the products we consume are healthy and sustainable for ourselves, producers and the ecosystems upon which we all depend on.
