About the Films:

Island Green: This short documentary takes a look at the changing face of PEI's agricultural industry. Once famous for its spuds and red mud, this tiny island province now has higher than average cancer and respiratory illness rates. Is there a link to industrialized farming? Rather than dwelling on PEI’s worrisome monocropping practices, Island Green dares to ask: What if PEI went entirely organic?

Cultivating Calgary's Local Food Resiliency: From the ground up and the top down, issues of land access, policy, finance, climate, and city planning are examined in this documentary exploring Calgary's local food movement. Hear the thoughts of farmers, restaurant owners, councillors, and others on the ground taking action and fighting for the potential they see in Calgary to become a leader in sustainable food systems.

Life and Debt: Jamaica — land of sea, sand and sun. And a prime example of the impact economic globalization can have on a developing country. Using conventional and unconventional documentary techniques, this searing film dissects the "mechanism of debt" that is destroying local agriculture and industry while substituting sweatshops and cheap imports.

With a voice-over narration written by Jamaica Kincaid, adapted from her book A Small Place, Life and Debt is an unapologetic look at the "new world order," from the point of view of Jamaican workers, farmers, government and policy officials who see the reality of globalization from the ground up.

About SCIC's Ethical Eats Project:

Food justice, workers rights, environmental resiliency are all concerns of SCIC and our members. In order to support a more just food system, SCIC created EthicalEats.ca to connect Saskatchewan people to information and tools to learn about global issues connected to common food items - such as biodiversity loss, workers’ rights, and water usage - and to find local businesses selling more ethical alternatives, such as fair trade, organic, and locally produced foods.
